Van Gogh's Gordina in Het Noordbrabants Museum

The largest purchase ever

Van Gogh's Gordina will remain in Brabant. Thanks to the support of funds, individuals and the business community, we managed to purchase this masterpiece from an English collector for €8.6 million. The painting is the largest purchase ever for Het Noordbrabants Museum. Gordina will be the shining centerpiece of our Van Gogh collection, which will have its own wing in 2026. Before that happens, she will first tour Brabant. A beautiful piece of history will thus remain accessible to everyone!

Thanks to the Museaal Aankoopfonds, the Mondriaan Fonds, Stichting Ambacht en Cultuur, the Vereniging Rembrandt, the VriendenLoterij, private and corporate donors, various public and private funds, inheritances, Province of North Brabant and various Brabant municipalities.

About the painting

Vincent van Gogh made Head of a Woman in March-April 1885. He was practicing painting to eventually create an intricate composition like The Potato Eaters. That work is considered the absolute highlight of Van Gogh's Brabant period, before he left for Paris.

Helewise Berger, curator of 19th- and 20th-century art: "Although Van Gogh painted in earth tones, there are many colors to be discovered. This makes the painting exceptional and attractive: a key piece in his oeuvre and thus in the collection of Het Noordbrabants Museum."
