Breda: In Huize Mertersem lived Vincent's wealthy godfather, the art dealer Vincent van Gogh. 'Uncle Cent' had an extensive collection of paintings, which must certainly have impressed young Vincent and Theo. He also brokered Vincent and Theo's appointments at the Goupil&Cie art gallery. From him Vincent received his first watercolor box as a gift when he decided to become an artist. Vincent and his uncle became separated. This had to do with their differing ideas about good taste in art, but certainly also with Vincent's inappropriate behavior.
